Pi Kappa Alpha

Spring 2006 Alumni Newsletter

Greetings alumni of Nu Chapter.  My name is Jordan Smith and I am the newly appointed chairperson of our Alumni Relations Committee.  I plan on doing great things this upcoming year to get you involved with our Fraternity once again.  I am open to any suggestions you would like to see put into action, so please do not hesitate to email me at NuChapterPikes@yahoo.com.

Interim

The brothers of Nu Chapter have just concluded a very fun and action-filled Interim.  Several brothers opted to travel this Interim, and Pi Kappa Alpha was represented in the nations of Israel, Ireland, Spain, Bolivia, and China.  Brothers also traveled throughout the United States, from studying the “Beat” generation in San Francisco to interning on Capitol Hill to rebuilding houses in Mississippi devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Newly Elected EC

In the past months, the Fraternity’s leadership has been passed to a new Executive Council.  Our new President is Samuel “Skip” Schumann ’07.  Michael Langley ’08 was elected to Internal Vice President, as well as the IFC Vice President of Public Relations.  Brother Trenton Shook ’07 was chosen as the new External Vice President.  Rounding out the new EC is Treasurer Wade Lindsey ’08, Secretary Jim Morgan ’07, and Sergeant at Arms Eric Lance ’07.

Other Recent Accomplishments

This year has proven to be and will continue to become a great time for Nu Chapter.  Academically, the end of the fall semester saw Pi Kappa Alpha with the highest overall fraternity GPA.  We have continued our philanthropy at the Boys & Girls Club of Spartanburg and see this as a great service opportunity for both the Fraternity and the city of Spartanburg.  Nu Chapter won the intramural football championship once again, and we are getting set for the start of basketball season.

House Improvements

After gaining yet another solid pledge class, our focus has again been turned to house improvements.  As you know, we have installed new hardwood floors that have greatly improved the overall appearance of the house.  More recently, the parents of Wade Lindsey ’08 and Mills Smith ’09 donated two brand new leather couches for the house.  Our goal for this spring is to conduct a complete renovation of the back deck area.  A tentative blueprint was sent out with the last newsletter, but if you would like to obtain an electronic copy please contact me at NuChapterPikes@yahoo.com.  We estimate the cost of completing these renovations to be $8,000.  So far, we have raised over $2,000 and very generous donations have been made by:

James C. Crawford III, ‘78

Michael A. Sandifer, ‘68

Kenneth H. Buffington, ‘65

Jeffrey and Susan Greene (Father of Mike Greene ’07 and Jon Greene ’09)

Dr. Trent Pierce (Father of 2005 Nu Chapter Dream Girl Meredith Pierce)

Nu Chapter is very thankful to the above for these donations toward our goal.  We are excited about the advantages the new project will present during the Rush period and for social functions.  If you would like to make a donation to this project, it would be greatly appreciated by the brotherhood.  Checks can be made payable to Pi Kappa Alpha and mailed to:

Fraternity Website

Brothers Wade Lindsey ’08 and Chris Cook ’06 have recently renovated our Fraternity website, www.wocopikes.com.  We are all very proud of this website and plan on using it not only to spread the word about Pi Kappa Alpha to potential new members but to also keep the alumni updated on what is happening at Nu Chapter.  The website also contains a page dedicated solely to alumni with a special “Where Are They Now?” section to keep you up to date on what your pledge brothers and fellow alumni are involved in.  I encourage each one of you to check it out, bookmark the webpage and frequently check back for updates.

Founder’s Day Celebration

The next big event for Nu Chapter is our Founder’s Day Celebration.  The brothers would like to extend an invitation to each of you and a date to join us in celebrating the founding of both the National Fraternity as well as Nu Chapter.  The festivities are being held on Friday, February 24th, 2006 at the Cleveland Park Event Center here in Spartanburg, SC.  Dinner is set to start at 6:30, followed by guest speaker Joe Turner (Clemson, Eta Alpha ’70).  Brother Turner has served as past International President and Vice President.  The cost of the banquet is $30 per couple and includes a meal catered by Mary Olejnik, mother of Steve Olejnik ’07.  If you would like to attend, we ask that you RSVP before February 9th at NuChapterPikes@yahoo.com.

Lastly, we ask you to let us know of any big news you would like to share, suggestions you have, or any contact/email changes you may have recently made.  You may do so by emailing the above address.  Best wishes from me and the other brothers of Nu Chapter.
